How to Press Flowers: A Simple Guide to Preserving Blooms

Pressing flowers is a timeless craft that transforms fresh blooms into delicate, lasting keepsakes. Whether you’re preserving a sentimental bouquet or capturing the beauty of your garden, this easy method allows you to turn flowers into art. Here’s how to press flowers like a pro:

1. Choose the Right Flowers

Opt for flowers that are naturally flat or have thin petals, like pansies, daisies, or violets. For thicker flowers, remove bulky parts like stems or stamens to ensure an even press.

2. Prep Your Flowers

Gently blot flowers with a paper towel to remove excess moisture. Arrange the petals or leaves in the desired shape—once pressed, they’ll stay that way.

3. Pressing Method

  • Using a Book:
Place the flowers between two sheets of parchment or blotting paper. Sandwich them inside a heavy book, adding additional books or weights on top. Leave for 1-2 weeks.
  • Using a Flower Press:
Position the flowers between layers of absorbent paper within the press. Tighten screws or clamps to apply pressure. Check them after 1-2 weeks.
  • Microwave Method (For Quick Results):
Place flowers between paper towels and press them between two microwave-safe plates. Heat in 10-15 second intervals, checking frequently. Be cautious not to scorch the petals.

4. Preserve and Display

Once dried, handle pressed flowers gently. Use them to decorate cards, bookmarks, or frame them as art. Sealing them with a clear adhesive or resin can add longevity.

Pressing flowers is a creative way to celebrate nature’s fleeting beauty, turning blooms into memories that last a lifetime. Have fun experimenting and crafting!
